Down With The Ship
Careful with this one – you may have thought it had something to do with the fact that Blaze knew Corbin’s name even though nobody had previously mentioned that Corbin, or perhaps that it had something to do with Blaze knowing which boat had sunk…
But let’s say that Blaze is telling the truth. If he was picked up by a skipper, it’s highly likely that they would have introduced themselves in which case he’d know Corbin’s name regardless of whether Corbin had died or not. Just because nobody had mentioned the name until that point in the conversation is not proof that it was impossible that Blaze could know the name of the skipper who rescued him. To the contrary it would be quite peculiar if he didn’t know Corbin’s name if he was telling the truth, and if he’d been picked up by a specific speedboat then that would be speedboat that would be in his story.
The real lacuna in Blaze’s story, the part which is impossible is…
…the fact that there was no wind, not even a flutter, and yet Blaze claims that the skipper who rescued him saw that his flag was upside down from a distance. If there was no wind then the flag would have hung limp at the mast and it would be impossible to see it was upside down.
So if there was enough wind for Corbin to see the flag then Blaze would not have been stranded, and if Blaze was stranded then there could not have been enough wind for Corbin to see the flag.
